The fortress of Rocca Montis Dragonis (Caserta, Italy) is known in written sources as early as the 12th century. Excavations of the site have discovered human activity dating back to prehistoric times. The rocky hilltop complex features 3 main curtain walls that protect the city of almost 100 structures. in 1269 the fortress of Rocca Montis Dragonis, was awarded to Philip, King of Thessaly. in 1461 it was besieged by the troops of King Ferdinand I of Aragon, and subsequently was granted to the Carafa family. The last inhabitants are believed to have left in the 16th century following an earthquake and collapse of the main “residential palace”. Today there is a permanent exhibition at the Civic Archaeological Museum of the town of Mondragone.
